A townhouse hotel on a quiet, leafy Pimlico street, nine minutes' walk from Victoria — crafted over five decades by one family.
The Melita occupies two houses built around 1825 on a quiet street in Pimlico, moments from the hustle of Victoria. They are the work of Thomas Cubitt, the architect commissioned in 1824 to build Pimlico and Belgravia for the Grosvenor Estate — fashionable housing that has never quite gone out of fashion. Sir Winston Churchill, Laurence Olivier and Charles de Gaulle have all been neighbours over the years.
The same family has owned and run the hotel since 1972, and it shows. The front desk is staffed around the clock, pastries are baked here each morning and set out in the lounge with proper coffee from half past seven, and every room is air conditioned and filtered, with beds from the same supplier who makes them for Buckingham Palace. Modern where it counts, and personal everywhere else.

Charlwood Street is a quiet residential street in Pimlico, one of the prettiest and most central corners of London. Victoria is a nine-minute walk — the Gatwick Express, national rail and three Underground lines — and Pimlico station is five. The number 24 stops outside the door and runs to Trafalgar Square, the British Museum, Chinatown and Camden. Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are each a short walk away, and the hotel sits outside the congestion zone.
